Sure, blender is already heavily used, but the extraordinary thing about this movie is that, despites the huge work they had, the movie is completely free.
I really think that’s awesome!

they aren’t free and in the spirit of open source but some other big movie titles were made with open source software. Both the Spiderman trilogy and the Lord of the Rings trilogy used blender heavily; and i believe everything from lord of the rings was thrown together using open source software. There is even a glance in one of the special features of lord of the rings where they are going over some things with gollum in blender on a k desktop
