Chris, you're lesser indentation is indeed an improvement ... but the gray highlights aren't: Rhythmbox tried the very same thing, and it had to be hard-coded, which led to problems with dark themes. The blank space approach, i.e., just an arrow to the right, would be more sensible, it's a nice improvement.

Hi Chris, please add your suggestion to the bug report. Just register yourself there and add a comment with your image. It looks nicer indeed ;D

(I didn't spend enough time in gimp to put the extra two characters back into the "Better" column, but you can clearly see that there's enough space)

I absolutely, 100% support splitting the list into logical groups. It's an excellent idea.

However, why does it have to be done with indenting? The sidebar will always be horribly space constrained and by indenting you can see you've lost 2 characters from the longer items. That's quite a lot when you could only see about 10 or 11 characters in the first place.

I quickly whipped something up in GIMP which I think makes much more sense in this kind of context. The rationale is that the places sidebar is very unlikely to ever require indenting to a second level (since you can't drill down through folders in it), so the logical separation can be indicated simply with the section headings:
