OS X v10.5 and Ubuntu 7.10

The hype is here. Two of the most used OSs from our days are going to have a new release this week month. Prepare your Digg feed for a lot of Ubuntu Linux and Mac OS X experience, schedule for release October 18th and 19th 26th respectively!

Both are incredibly improved and I guess that there will be really a lot to talk about each one of them, when they begin to spread through all those computers out there.

I’ll keep with Ubuntu, obviously, mainly due to the 200$ kept in my pocket! But I’m sure there’s a lot of people out there dying to put their hand into this most recent OS X v10.5.

Is Open-Source achieving the quality standards needed to be selected by Desktop users over other well paid OSs?

You can learn more about each one of them by clicking in each picture.

Which are you waiting for?

(Sorry to all you MS Windows fans out there, Windows was not forgotten, it’s just not even at this level)

Avoiding Slow Ubuntu Updates

With Ubuntu’s 7.10 release by this Thursday, as usual, everyone will what to update to this new version, as soon as it appears as available. To avoid a very slow update, I recommend you to update your systems right now to the development version which is now fully stable, since little is left to do in this last two days.

To do this, just open a terminal and type:

sudo update-manager -d

Shipit is Shipping It

With less than 10 days remaining to the release of the 7.10 Ubuntu version, ShipIt is already accepting pre-orders for the free cd’s. So, go on, order and spread them :D

Ubuntu 7.10 - Spread the Word

As said, Ubuntu 7.10 is coming, with really nice new features! If you want to, you can add an Ubuntu powered countdown script to any website, just like the following one:

P.S.:Not viewable through some feed readers.

Ubuntu 7.10

The Gutsy Gibbon is on it’s way! The date is already scheduled to October 18th, and cd’s will be freely available, as usual, through ShipIt. You can learn about the blueprints for Gutsy on Launchpad.

Ndiswrapper and SMC USB Wireless Adapters

Today I had the roughest Ubuntu installation ever. The problem was the lack of documentation to get ndiswrapper and SMC adapters working. After some reading and trying, I’ve figured out the solution:

Edit /etc/modprob.d/blacklist and add:

blacklist bcm43xx
blacklist islsm
blacklist prism54usb

Edit /etc/modules and add:

ndiswrapper

After this, download the Windows driver, extract it to a folder and do the following:

sudo ndiswrapper -i (driver name).inf
sudo ndiswrapper -m
sudo depmod -a
sudo modprobe ndiswrapper

Reboot and you’re ready to go! It will probably work for any wireless usb adapter that needs ndiswrapper.
